RALEIGH, NC – Matt Heavner hit a grand slam, but USC Upstate racked up 15 runs on 11 hits on their way to a 15-5 victory over NC State Tuesday night from Doak Field. The loss ends the Wolfpack's four-game midweek win streak.
NC State (17-8) couldn't slow USC Upstate's (13-11) Johnny Sweeney. The Spartan designated hitter went 4-4 with seven RBIs and two runs scored. The Spartans struck out 10 times, but NC State also gave up nine free passes.
Of the four hits for NC State, two came from Josh Hogue, who brought in the first Wolfpack run of the game with a sacrifice fly.
Cooper Consiglio (1-2) started on the mound for NC State and got the loss after just 1.2 innings of work, giving up five runs, of which only two were earned on four hits, walking three, and one strikeout.
The Spartans scored runs in the first three innings: two in the first, three in the second, and four in the third. The visitors had two scoreless innings in the fourth and fifth before scoring one in the sixth and then five in the fifth on their way to a run-rule victory.
Alex Sanderson went 3.1 innings in his start for the Spartans; he gave up two hits, but one brought in four runs, which was the grand slam from Heavner. Kyle Beaty (3-0) replaced Beaty and got the win going 1.2 innings, allowing one run on two hits with two strikeouts and no walks.
Carson Kelly came on in the top of the third in a bases-loaded situation and a 3-2 count. Kelly got a strikeout for the second out and would finish the inning. Kelly, over 3.2 innings pitched, had a career-high six strikeouts.
Up Next: NC State will make the short drive to Durham to take on the Duke Blue Devils for a three-game set, beginning on Friday, March 28th at 8 p.m. on ACC Network.
