RALEIGH – On senior night, seventh-ranked NC State wrestling improved to 5-0 in ACC action at its final home dual of the season when it took down 17th-ranked Stanford by a 27-13 score Friday night.
With Stanford not having anyone to weigh in at 125 lbs, Vince Robinson earned his win by forfeit to start the dual with six points for the Wolfpack.
Kai Orine took the mat for the final time in Reynolds Coliseum but was unable to upset seventh-ranked Tyler Knox and ultimately fell by major decision to cut the team lead to 6-4.
The highlight of the night was when Troy Hohman came from behind with just over a minute left in his match to upset Stanford's No. 21 Jason Miranda. In his first-ever collegiate bout at 141 lbs, Hohman was trailing 2-3 in the third period but got a two point near-fall with less than 90 seconds remaining to take the 4-3 lead. He was able to secure the riding time point as well to take a 5-3 victory and put his team up 9-4.
On his senior night, Ed Scott secured a major decision to give beneficial bonus points to his team, after Koy Buesgens took the loss at 149 lbs.
Moving into the 165 pound bout, NC State held a 13-7 lead with five matches left. Derek Fields fell in a heartbreaking match after nearly upsetting No. 13 Hunter Garvin. Fields held a 5-3 lead with just 15 seconds to go in the third period but Garvin was able to get a takedown to take the edge. Fields made a last second effort to break free for an escape to tie it up, the refs awarded the point on the mat which was then reversed giving Stanford the points.
Back-to-back bonus point wins at 174 lbs and 184 lbs by Matty Singleton and Dylan Fishback gave the Pack comfortability about its hopes of a win since they were carried to a 22-10 lead after Fishback's second period technical fall.
Isaac Trumble closed out the night with his sixth technical fall of the season over No. 31 Peter Ming to push the final score to 27-13.
