Wolfpack Advances to NCAA College Cup for Second Time in Program History

WASHINGTON, D.C. – NC State men's soccer comes out on top of the scoring frenzy against No. 7 seed Georgetown to advance to the NCAA College Cup for the first time since 1990 and just the second time in program history.

A scoring frenzy at Shaw Field resulted in the advancement of the NC State Wolfpack to the NCAA Semifinals in Cary, N.C. on Friday, December 12. Seeded as the No. 15 team, NC State is the highest-seeded team remaining in the tournament.

This marks the second straight postseason that the Pack has upset the Hoyas at Shaw Field after defeating them last year in the second round as an unseeded team, when they were the No. 4 seed.

The game got off to a quick start with a goal by Taig Healy in the sixth minute. The senior also scored a goal in the sixth minute in the Pack's previous match against UNCG in the NCAA Third Round.

Just two minutes later, the Hoyas committed a handball in their own box to grant NC State a penalty kick that was scored by senior Drew Lovelace to put the scoreboard at 2-0 in just the first eight minutes of action.

In the 34th minute, Georgetown found the back of the net with a wicked far-out shot to cut their deficit. But another handball by the Hoyas shortly after granted a second penalty kick for the Pack, this time scored by Carlos Santamaria to give a 3-1 lead.

That goal was quickly trailed by another Georgetown goal in the 37th minute. After the first 45 minutes of the match, the Pack led 3-2.

Despite all of the scoring coming from the first frame of the game, most of the chippy action took place in the second half as each team was fighting for any possible scoring opportunity.

In the end, the Pack was able to hold off the Hoyas to advance. This is the only game this season that the red-and-white conceded two goals and still claimed the victory.

With its 15th win this season, this marks the most single season wins for the program since 1990.
