CARY, N.C. – The NC State men's soccer team's historic season came to an end after falling to Washington, 3-2, in extra time Monday evening in the College Cup Final at First Horizon Stadium in Cary.
In the 92nd minute of play, the Huskies found the back of the net and took the match thanks to the golden goal.
The two squads were knotted up, 2-2, at the end of regulation. The Pack out-shot the Huskies 17-12 and took double the amount of corner kicks (10-to-5) in regulation.
Donavan Phillip narrowly missed the back of the net in the 30th minute, shooting from the left side of the pitch across the box to the far post, trickling out for a goalkick.
In the 43rd minute, the Huskies Zach Ramsey managed to sneak past the Pack's defense and put Washington on the board first.
After the first frame, NC State led the score sheet with seven shots compared to Washington's six. Phillip, in addition to midfielder Justin McLean led the squad with a pair of shots in the opening frame.
The Pack opened the second half with three corner kicks and despite the Pack's efforts, the Huskies managed to stop their chances of getting close to the net.
In the 61st minute, the Pack conceded a second goal to the Huskies but four minutes later Phillip found the net after an assist from ACC Defensive Player of the Year Nikola Markovic.
After the Pack minimized the deficit to one, Phillip and McLean each attempted another shot but the Huskies keeper stopped them in time.
Midfielder Taig Healy scored the equalizer in the 87th minute after passes from McLean and Caleb Tommy allowed the senior to find the right side of the net.
Phillip and McLean lead the Pack with a combined nine shots while Healy and senior Drew Lovelace each added a pair to the stat sheet.
In just his second season at the helm, head coach Marc Hubbard led the squad to an impressive 16-3-4 record, in addition to the program's first-ever College Cup Final.
