RALEIGH – A penalty kick that resulted in a late goal for the Wolfpack propelled third-ranked NC State men's soccer to claim a draw with 18th-ranked UNC Greensboro Tuesday night.
Despite dominating UNCG in total shots taken, the scoreboard resulted in a 1-1 draw in NC State's second ranked match-up of the season.
Frankie DeFrancesco and Justin McLean each put up back-to-back near goals followed by Logan Erb with a crucial save in the 25th minute to keep the first frame of the match scoreless on both sides.
10 minutes into the second half, a far out shot from UNC Greensboro's Enzo Dovlo nailed a ball into the upper corner to get past Erb and take the lead.
The game was sent into a frenzy that continued to spiral as the Spartans took the lead in the 55th minute. NC State continued to have numerous close opportunities to find the back of the net, notching 25 shots in the end.
Ultimately a handball in the box by a Spartan defender landed a penalty kick for the Wolfpack. Senior midfielder Drew Lovelace was selected for the shot and nailed it to tally the equalizer.
The draw marks for both seasons under Marc Hubbard to hold undefeated records against nonconference opponents during the regular season.
