NC State wins team title by ten shots while Nick Mathews claims individual title with a six-shot win
DURHAM, N.C. – The NC State men's golf team got the 2024-25 season off to a spectacular start as the Pack won the team title, while redshirt senior Nick Mathews claimed individual medalist honors, Monday at Duke's Rod Myers Invitational.
The 54-hole event started with two rounds on Sunday. After 18 holes, the Pack was in fifth place, but thanks to a 10-under par team score in the second round jumped into a tie with tournament-host Duke with 18 holes left.
On Monday, the Pack left no doubt, jumping into the lead early in the round and never looking back as NC State won the event by 10 shots.
This marks the 13th tournament title for NC State head coach Press McPhaul as he starts his eighth season with the Pack. NC State has won at least one tournament title in seven of the eight seasons McPhaul has been head coach.
Nick Mathews rolled to victory with a 54-hole score of 14-under par. The Mebane, N.C., native opened his day Sunday with a two-under par 70, but jumped into the tournament lead in the afternoon on Sunday as he shot an eight-under par 64 to take a two-shot lead on the field.
Mathews' 64 in the second round was the lowest 18-hole score of his collegiate career and tied for the sixth-lowest 18-hole score in program history.
On Monday, Mathews continued his steady play as he posted five birdies against just one bogey to steadily pull away to a six-shot win with a final round 68.
Mathews' total score of 202 is tied for the fourth-best score related to par in program history and is the second-best individual score in the 14-year history of the Rod Myers Invitational.
Joey Lenane was next for the Pack with a tied for seventh place finish. Lenane sat at one-over par through 36 holes, but shot a five-under par 67 on Monday to move up 16 spots for a top-10 finish.
Xander Goboy, playing in his first collegiate tournament, notched a top-10 finish behind a fantastic final round on Monday. Like Lenane, Goboy entered the final round with a total score over par, but a bogey-free final round that included five birdies saw the Chesapeake, Va., native jump 17 spots on the leaderboard to a tie for 10th place.
Michele Ferrero gave the Pack four golfers in the top-15 with a 13th-place finish at one-under par. The Turin, Italy native was at his best in the second round on Saturday, helping the Pack move up the team leaderboard with a three-under par 69.
Rounding out the NC State lineup was Jake Wiktor who finished in 68th place.
