Mebane, N.C., native tied program record for score related to par at an NCAA Regional
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – NC State redshirt junior Nick Mathews shot a 54-hole score of 12-under par to finish in a tie for second place at the Chapel Hill NCAA Regional that was played at UNC's Finley Golf Club.
Mathews was the low individual not on an advancing team at the Chapel Hill Regional and will therefore advance to the NCAA Championship which will be held May 24-29 in Carlsbad, Calif.
Mathews score of 12-under par ties with Benjamin Shipp (2018) for the lowest 54-hole score in an NCAA Regional in program history. The 12-under par score is the best 54 hole score of Mathews career.
Finley Golf Club is a par 70 course and Mathews total score of 198 is just the second time in program history and NC State golfer shot under 200 for 54 holes.
The Mebane, N.C, native got better every round as he shot a three-under par 67 in the first round, a four-under par 66 in the second round and in Wednesday's third and final round score a five-under par 65.
Mathews' teammate Spencer Oxendine, playing in his final collegiate tournament, finished in a tie for 21st place out of 75 golfers. Oxendine shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 70 in the first and second round before finishing the tournament with a two-under par 68 on Wednesday.
Clemson won the Chapel Hill Regional by one shot over second place ETSU. Tournament-host UNC finished third while Georgia Tech placed fourth and Baylor finished in fifth. Those five schools all advanced to the NCAA Championship in California.
UNC's Austin Greaser won the individual title with a score of 13-under par, one shot ahead of Mathews and Baylor's Johnny Keefer.
