RALEIGH, N.C. – Dave Doeren became NC State's winningest coach in program history Saturday night with his 78th career win at the helm, passing Earle Edwards after the Wolfpack defeated Miami 20-6 at Carter-Finley Stadium.
The defense set the tone all night, creating four turnovers, which included three interceptions, three sacks and seven quarterback hurries, holding the Hurricanes to six points without allowing a touchdown. It is the first time the Wolfpack defense held an ACC opponent without a touchdown since Nov. 5, 2011, when NC State defeated North Carolina 13-0 at Carter-Finley Stadium.
In a four-point game in the fourth quarter, freshman Kendrick Raphael sealed the Wolfpack victory with a 31-yard rushing touchdown, giving NC State a 17-6 lead with five minutes to go. It was Raphael's first career touchdown and the longest run of his career. The score capped off an eight-play, 97-yard drive.
Quarterback MJ Morris finished 11-21 for 123 yards and a touchdown. Kevin "KC" Concepcion totaled 61 yards on five receptions. Payton Wilson led the defense again, logging 16 tackles to lead the team. He also reached double digits in tackles for the 21st time in his career.
The Hurricanes put points on the board first, as they made a 48-yard field goal after a 12-play, 43-yard drive that the Wolfpack defense could hold to three points.
The Wolfpack's first touchdown of the evening came courtesy of Jordan Poole, who caught his first offensive touchdown of his career after moving to running back from linebacker after the bye week. The 12-yard connection from Morris made it 7-3.
The score was set up by a 36-yard catch and run from Concepcion, setting up the Wolfpack deep in Miami territory. It was Concepcion's 11th catch of 20 or more yards this season, which leads the team.
Another defensive stand from the Wolfpack, this time from inside their own 10-yard line, forced another Miami field goal to make it 7-6 in the second quarter.
After a Morris fumble in Wolfpack territory, the defense again held Miami out of the end zone, giving the ball right back to the offense as Aydan White intercepted Tyler Van Dyke in the end zone to keep the score 7-6. It was White's eighth career interception, the most among Wolfpack defensive players.
The Wolfpack defense continued making plays as they once again created a turnover with Red Hibbler getting to the quarterback and forcing a fumble, which Davin Vann recovered at the Miami 9-yard line.
A Brayden Narveson 39-yard field goal was all NC State could manage after as the Wolfpack moved in the wrong direction due to penalties and a sack. The teams went into the halftime break with the Wolfpack leading 10-6.
Receiving the second-half kickoff, Miami moved the ball down the field, but the Wolfpack defense, as it did all in the first half, did not break and forced a 44-yard field goal that went wide left to keep the score at 10-6.
With the ball at the NC State 3-yard line and fourth down for Miami, Shyheim Battle came up with a huge tackle to hold the Hurricanes to no gain, giving the ball back to the Wolfpack offense en route to their sixth win of the season and 36th bowl qualification.
Up Next: The Wolfpack travels to Winston-Salem and takes on Wake Forest for a 2 p.m. kickoff on Nov. 11. The game will be televised on the CW Network.
