Pack knocks off Cal-Poly and Lehigh, will meet NIU
NEW ORLEANS, LA. The No. 7 N.C. State wrestling team cruised into the finals of the Journeyman Collegiate Duals, setting up the chance to end 2022 on a high note.
Â
The Wolfpack (7-0) dominated No. 25 Cal-Poly 33-3 and followed that up with a 24-10 win over No. 19 Lehigh.
Â
With those two wins, N.C. State advances to the finals in the Red Pool, where they will face No. 22 Northern Iowa. The Panthers upset No. 3 Ohio State to set up the showdown with the Pack.
Â
N.C. State has never defeated Northern Iowa in wrestling. Before Monday night, the Pack were 0-10 versus the Mountain Hawks.Â
Â
Lehigh proved to be a formidable opponent once again, not allowing the Wolfpack to pull away early, unlike what N.C. State was able to do in their first match of the day.
Â
The Wolfpack won 9 out of 10 matches against Cal-Poly, jumping out to a commanding 17-0 lead. One of the highlights was in the 197 class when No. 9 Isaac Trumble picked up a fall over No. 7 Bernie Truax.
Â
The early matches featured a 9-4 win by steadily improving freshman Jackson Arrington over No. 11 Dom Demas and a major decision in the 141 class from Ryan Jack.
Â
Even after the Mustangs took the 165 match, N.C. State was never in any real trouble. The second match against Lehigh was a bit more dramatic early on.
Â
N.C. State and the Mountain Hawks tied at three after the 133 match. The Wolfpack managed to win the next two matches before Lehigh got back on the board at 157. Freshman Matty Singleton turned the momentum back in favor of the Pack, defeating Connor Herceg, 10-1, for the major decision. That win by Singleton put N.C. State ahead 13-6 with the strength of the lineup on deck.
Â
Alex Faison edged out Jake Logan, 5-4, in the 174 class and Trent Hidlay made quick work of Tate Samuelson in the 184 class, earning a 11-2 major decision win. Tyrie Houghton picked up the final win of the night for N.C. State, defeating Nathan Taylor, 10-2.
Â
Up next: Tuesday's matchup with Northern Iowa will be the first showdown with the Panthers since 1989.Â
