KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – The NC State men's tennis team is headed to the second round of the NCAA Championships for the first time since 2014 as it defeated Middle Tennessee, 4-0, Friday afternoon inside the Goodfriend Tennis Center.
The Wolfpack improves to 19-10 on the season, securing its most single-season victories since the 2012 campaign when it picked up 20 wins. With the win, NC State moves on to the second round of the NCAA Championships for just the fourth time in program history where it will face either Tennessee or Radford at 2 p.m. on Saturday.
Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic broke to go up 3-1 early in their match on court two and went on to cruise to the 6-1 decision over Middle Tennessee's Max Rauch and Francisco Rocha. The Wolfpack brothers have now won 10 of their last 11 doubles matches in the 2019 season.
The doubles point came down to the final match after the Blue Raiders picked up the win on court one.
A tight battle between NC State's Tadas Babelis and Yannai Barkai and Middle Tennessee's Pavel Motl and Gonzalo Morell saw the pairs hold serve for the first eight games of the match. The Blue Raiders managed to break first to take the 5-4 lead, but Babelis and Barkai saved a pair of set points and broke right back on deciding point to put the match back on serve.
The match extended into a tiebreaker, where Babelis and Barkai picked up the 7-6 (4) win to give NC State a lead headed into singles action.
Alexis Galarneau quickly added to the Pack's lead in singles play. The 21st-ranked Wolfpack junior went up two breaks early over Morell on the way to taking a 6-1, 6-1 win on court one.
Georgiy Malyshev added a 6-2, 6-4 straight-sets win over Motl on court six to put NC State up 3-0.
Barkai clinched for the Pack as he held serve on deciding point to defeat Chris Edge 7-5, 6-4.
