RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State's defense accounted for eight sacks for the second straight game and defeated Syracuse 16-10 Thursday night at Carter-Finley Stadium.

After forcing Syracuse into back-to-back three-and-outs on their opening two drives, NC State netted 32 and then 43-yard Christopher Dunn field goals to take a 6-0 lead 10 minutes in.

The Wolfpack used some razzle dazzle to get into the end zone with just over a minute left in the first half. After a backwards pass, Thayer Thomas found a wide open Trent Pennix along the sideline for a 32-yard TD pass to give NC State the 13-0 halftime lead.

Dunn added a 23-yard field goal in the third quarter to push the lead to 16-0.

Syracuse broke the Wolfpack shutout with a 32-yard field goal on the next drive.

The Orange broke the goal line with their first touchdown with 3:00 left, and the game ended with that 16-10 score.

The Wolfpack took over at the Syracuse 39-yard line, and Zonovan Knight took two rushes for 29 yards. On the next play, QB Bailey Hockman threw a backwards pass to Thayer Thomas, who found a wide open Trent Pennix on the opposite sideline for a 32-yard score and the Pack's first touchdown.

NOTABLES
• With eight sacks today, and eight last game at Florida State, the Pack's 16 sacks in back-to-back games are the most in consecutive games in school history. The previous high was 14 (vs. UVA and UNC) in 1982.

• Thayer Thomas, who threw his second touchdown pass of the season, is the first wide receiver to throw more than one touchdown pass in a season since sophomore Bryan Peterson threw two in 2000.

• QB Bailey Hockman was the first lefthanded quarterback to start a game for NC State since Cam Young vs. Virginia on Nov. 8, 1986.

• True freshmen Shyheim Battle, C.J. Clark, Terrell Dawkins, and Joshua Harris all made their Wolfpack debuts, playing on special teams.

• NC State's rushing defense, which came into the game ranked sixth in the NCAA, held its third straight opponent under 100 yards rushing - and for the fifth time in the first six games this season.

• NC State was a perfect 2-of-2 in the red zone today, improving to 24-of-25 on the season.
