RALEIGH, N.C. – The No. 6/9 NC State men's and women's swimming and diving teams made their return to dual competition in dominant fashion, picking up a pair of wins over visiting UNC-Chapel Hill Saturday afternoon at the Casey Aquatic Center.
Seeing action at home for the first time this season, the ninth-ranked Wolfpack women set a pair of pool records on the way to defeating No. 24 UNC-CH 197-97, and the No. 6 Pack men beat the visiting Tar Heels by a 193-101 score. The wins completed the team's fourth sweep in a row over UNC-CH.
QUOTING THE COACHES:
Head coach Braden Holloway
"Any time you get into a dual meet atmosphere, if you get up early, it creates momentum and extra excitement for your team. This meet definitely prepared us because it's been so long since we've raced. Exploring a few events today allowed us to learn some good things and some bad things for next week. This got us back in racing mode, so our team will learn a lot from this meet. We're still fine tuning. We want to get better each week we perform. We needed to see where we were, and hopefully next week we're a little bit better as we head into the championship segment of our season. NC State against Carolina in every sport is just a fun stage that's set. Being at home again is great for our fans to come here and cheer for us. It's great for the sport to have a healthy competition, and we want to keep the rivalry going and keep the good meets going."
Head diving coach Yahya Radman
"I think it was a good day for us. Our divers did an outstanding job. The process speaks for itself. I'm proud of Taylor (Bennett) for performance on one-meter. I'm very impressed with Madeline (Kline), who is starting to look like a true contender at the Zone Championships. On the men's side, Holt (Gray) is really coming out of his shell. I couldn't be more excited about where this program is going considering where it came from."
INDIVIDUAL HIGHLIGHTS:
Competing at home for the first time as a member of the Wolfpack, freshman Kylee Alons earned a team-best three individual first-place finishes. Alons came out hot in the 200-yard butterfly with a time of 1:57.94, just .30 seconds short of tying the program record. She also placed first in the 100-yard freestyle (49.00) and the 100-yard butterfly (53.63).
Emma Muzzy (100-yard backstroke, 200-yard backstroke) and Julia Poole (200-yard freestyle, 200-yard individual medley) joined Alons as the Wolfpack women who won multiple individual events during Saturday's dual.
The Wolfpack women also saw two new pool records set on the afternoon. Muzzy brought down the previous pool record in the 100-yard backstroke as she placed first in 53.10, and Ky-lee Perry reset her own 50-yard freestyle pool record with a time of 22.27.
NC State's distance swimmers made a statement as the Pack swept the podium in both 1,000-yard freestyle races.
Tamila Holub led the Wolfpack women with a time of 9:53.65 and was followed by Anna Jahns (2nd, 9:59.24) and Summer Finke (3rd, 10:01.32) in the top three. Jahns also added a distance win to her Saturday resumé, first-place finish in the 500-yard freestyle where she placed first in 4:54.93.
Jack McIntyre (1st, 9:11.67), Gil Kiesler (2nd, 9:17.93) and Danny Erlenmeyer (3rd, 9:19.57) rounded out the 1000-yard freestyle podium sweep in the first individual events of the afternoon.
The NC State men relied on a group of balanced scorers, but senior captain Andreas Vazaios led the way with a pair of first-place finishes in the 100-yard backstroke (47.53) and the 200-yard individual medley (1:46.03).
DIVING:
Freshman Taylor Bennett shined in her first home meet with the Wolfpack as she finished in the top two on both boards. Bennett started her outing placing second on the three-meter (268.35) and went on to end her day by taking first on the one-meter. Her 270.90 one-meter score was a personal best and a Zone qualifying mark.
Madeline Kline also picked up a pair of top-two finishes for the Wolfpack women, including a top finish on the three-meter board with a 283.50 score.
On the men's side, James Brady and Holt Gray traded first-place finishes, with Gray picking up the win on the three-meter (342.70) and Brady taking first on the one-meter board (320.70).
