"Virginia did a great job of competing in tough conditions and did a great job of finishing tough sets," said head coach Kyle Spencer. "I'm proud of this team and how far we've come. NC State managed to grab the first doubles win of the day as Tadas Babelis and Georgiy Malyshev defeated Ammar Alhaqbani and Spencer Bozsik 6-1, but the Cavaliers picked up wins on the remaining two doubles courts.
Igor Saveljic and Ivan Saveljic battled against Virginia's 27th-ranked Aswin Lizen and Gianni Ross, but the Cavaliers prevailed 6-4.
On court one, Matthew Lord and Carl Soderlund defeated No. 69 Alexis Galarneau and Michael Ogden 7-5 to give Virginia a 1-0 lead in the match.
In singles play, No. 31 Soderlund extended the Cavaliers' lead, defeating No. 37 Galarneau 6-3, 6-1 on court one.
Babelis picked up a singles win to put the Pack on the board. The Wolfpack freshman handled Ross 6-3, 6-3 on court two and brought NC State within one in the match score.
On court three, 28th-ranked Lizen bested No. 121 Igor 6-4, 6-2 and put the Cavaliers a match away from the clinch.
Malyshev added another win for NC State on court five with a straight-sets victory over Ammar Alhaqbani, 6-4, 6-3.
Ivan managed to force a tiebreaker for the second set, but Virginia's Lord took the match 6-1, 7-6 (3) to win it for the Cavaliers.
