Pack Leads Golfweek Conference Challenge After First Round

CEDAR RAPIDS, IOWA – The NC State men's golf team shot a fantastic 274 – 14-under-par – to lead the Golfweek Conference Challenge held at the Cedar Rapids Country Club after one round of play.
The Pack has a nine shot lead on tournament-host Iowa. UNC Wilmington is in third place, two shots behind Iowa.
NC State has four of its five individuals in the top-10 after the first round, led by Stephen Franken who is pacing the field after shooting a six-under-par 66 in the first round. Franken recorded a birdie on the second hole and then posted three consecutive birdies on the seventh, eighth and ninth holes to go out in four-under-par. He also birdied the 13th and 14th holes as the junior recorded no bogeys in the opening round.
Benjamin Shipp is tied for third after registering a four-under-par 68 in the first round. Shipp posted six birdies and just two bogeys on the day.
Nolan Mills Jr., and Easton Paxton both shot two-under-par 70 to place in a tie for eighth-place. Paxton is the Pack's lone freshman on this year's squad and Sunday was his first appearance for NC State.
The Pack's top-four scorers on Sunday played nearly flawless golf on the back-nine as the four players combined to shoot eight-under-par with just one bogey.
Harrison Rhoades rounded out the Pack contingent with a 75 to sit in a tie for 44th place out of 75 golfers.
The Pack returns to the links Monday for the second round with the first NC State golfer teeing off at noon.
