
No. 44 NC State Falls to No. 1 Virginia

DURHAM, N.C. – After rain forced the ACC Championships to relocate to Duke's Sheffield Tennis Center, No. 44 NC State fell 4-1 to No. 1 Virginia. The Pack went down early but made a strong comeback late. The comeback attempt came just short, as NC State moves to 18-14 (5-7 ACC) and Virginia improves to 23-3 (11-1 ACC).
Match Recap:
Virginia jumped out to an early lead, grabbing the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. UVa's duo of No. 17 Kwiatkowski and Mac Styslinger took a 6-1 victory over the Saveljic twins on court two and Collin Altamirano and J.C. Aragone won 6-3 on court three.
Despite the Pack making strong moves on the top-three courts, Virginia extended its lead with straight set wins on courts four and six.
No. 68 Aragone defeated Igor 6-3, 6-4 on court four and Luca Corinteli defeated Shoti Meparidze 6-4, 6-3 on court six to take the 3-0 lead.
No. 54 Simon Norenius and Ivan narrowly fell in tiebreaks in their respective first sets. The two rebounded in the second set, as Norenius won 7-5 and Ivan led 5-1 when the match was called.
No. 95 Nick Horton earned the Pack's lone point of the match with a big upset over No. 6 Kwiatkowski. He won 7-6(4), 6-2 for his 22nd win of the season and 16th of the spring. The win is his biggest ranked win of the year.
On court two, No. 102 Thomas Weigel took the first set 6-1 and dropped his second set 3-6. In the final set, Weigel went down, 4-2 and was broken to go down 5-2. He fell the next game, as No. 40 Altamirano earned the, 1-6, 6-3, 6-2 win to clinch the match.
