Jack, Morris, and Speno Advance to Semifinals at Midlands Championships

Evanston, Ill. - The No. 10 NC State wrestling team advanced three grapplers to the semifinals at the 54th annual Midlands Championships on Friday. R-So. Jamal Morris (133 pounds), Jr. Kevin Jack (141), and R-Sr. Sam Speno (149) all went undefeated in Friday's two sessions.
Returning to action for NC State, No. 12 seed Jamal Morris went 4-0 in advancing to the semifinals at 133 pounds. Morris started with a 9-2 decision, followed by a first-period pin, and a 10-4 decision. In the quarterfinals, Morris recorded a four-point and two-point near fall and 5:33 of riding time in getting a 9-1 major decision over Luke Karam of Lehigh. Morris will take on No. 1 seed Zane Richards of Illinois, ranked No. 3 nationally, in tomorrow's semifinals.
No. 2 seed junior Kevin Jack continues his hot stretch, extending his winning streak to 16 with three wins today. Jack scored a pin and then an 8-0 major to advance to the quarters. In the quarters, Jack got an 8-3 win over No. 7 seed Christop Carton of Iowa. In the semifinals, Jack will face No. 3 seed Anthony Ashnault of Rutgers, ranked No 6 nationally, in tomorrow's semifinals. Jack beat Ashanult 2-0 at the Journeymen Tussle earlier this month.
No. 5 seed redshirt-senior Sam Speno was the third member to advance to the semifinals with a perfect 3-0 mark on the day. Speno scored a pair of decisions, 12-5, 7-4, and then a 7-2 decision over No. 4 seed Steve Bleise of Northern Illinois in the quarterfinals. Speno faces No. 1 seed Brandon Sorensen of Iowa, ranked No. 2 nationally, in tomorrow's semifinals.
In addition to the three in the semifinals, NC State has six more wrestlers who will be in action tomorrow in the consolation bracket, after a loss in today's action: Fr. Hayden Hidlay (157-unattached), R-Jr. Brian Hamann (165), Sr. Pete Renda (184-unattached), R-Jr. Michael Macchiavello (184), Jr. Michael Boykin (285), and R-Sr. Mike Kosoy (285).
Of the 15 wrestlers competing, the Pack had six of its wrestlers advance to the quarterfinals and eight in the consolation bracket into the second session of the night.
Sessions III and IV are scheduled for 1 p.m. and 8 p.m. ET tomorrow.
