NC State baseball fell 8-3 to Virginia in the first of a three-game series at Doak Field at Dail Park on Friday night.

A pitcher's duel after four innings, Virginia (27-15, 10-12) broke the scoreless tie with a one run in the fifth, before a five-run sixth opened a 6-0 lead. NC State (21-18, 9-12) put the outcome in doubt with Preston Palmeiro's three-run shot in the seventh to cut the lead in half, but a pair of Cavalier insurance runs in the eighth and ninth set the final margin at 8-3.

The five-run inning spoiled another strong pitching performance by freshman Brian Brown (3-3), who took the loss after allowing three runs, one earned, on five hits and three walks over five innings of work, fanning three. Friday's three-walk effort marked only the second time in 10 outings this year the lefty has walked more than a pair.

Palmeiro's homer represents the sophomore's fifth of the season, part of a 2-for-5 day with three RBIs and a run. Logan Ratledge saw his hitting streak come to an end at 21 games despite reaching twice on a walk and a hit by pitch. Palmeiro now holds the Wolfpack's longest active hitting streak at 10 games.

Travis Orwig relieved Brown in the sixth and went 1 2/3 with three runs allowed, none of them earned. Evan Mendoza pitched the next two frames, holding the Cavs to two earned on two hits. Evan Brabrand recorded the final out.

Jake Fincher went 2-for-4 with the Pack's lone double, a run, and a walk. Andrew Knizner and Joe Dunand each provided one hit, Dunand was also hit by pitch and drew a walk.
