NC State baseball captured the series over Pitt with a 7-1 win on Saturday at Doak Field at Dail Park behind 15 combined strikeouts from Brian Brown, Jon Olczak, Will Gilbert, and Tommy DeJuneas.
Brown (3-1) scored the win for the Wolfpack (16-9, 5-5 ACC) on five innings with eight strikeouts, one shy of tying his career high of nine set this year against FIU. The freshman lefty allowed one earned on a wind-aided solo shot to start the fifth, holding Pitt (11-14, 4-7) to four hits and two walks.
Olczak fanned a pair in a no-hit sixth with three walks. Gilbert punched out one of two batters faced in the seventh. DeJuneas mowed down four in 2 2/3 innings of one-hit ball without a walk to pick up his second save of the year.
During the Pack's current five-game winning streak, NC State pitchers boast 53 strikeouts and Wolfpack hitters total 25 doubles.
Preston Palmeiro, Andrew Knizner, and Jake Fincher supplied the Pack's three two-hit performances. Palmeiro went 2-for-4 with a double, two RBIs, a run, and a sac fly. Fincher scored twice in 2-for-4 day with an RBI and his first stolen base of the year. Knizner provided a 2-for-5 outing with a run.
Logan Ratledge socked his 11th double of the season and third of the weekend. The senior's on pace to crack State's single-season leaderboard by the end of the year, where 23 currently ranks tied for eighth all-time.
Chance Shepard had an RBI single in a bases loaded pinch-hit situation. Bubby Riley hit an RBI double off the wall in left. Josh McLain reached in his only plate appearance before stealing third and scoring. Joel McKeithan and Jake Armstrong each scored a run on one hit.
State opened up a 1-0 lead in the bottom fourth, promptly tied on Pitt's fifth-inning solo homer. The Pack added single runs in the fifth and sixth to retake command, 3-1. The seventh inning broke the game open as the Wolfpack sent three runners to the plate thanks to doubles by Palmeiro and Riley.
NC State returns to action on Sunday at 1 PM for the series finale against Pitt. Streaming coverage will be carried by GoPack All-Access. Radio duties will be handled by 88.1 WKNC. Fans can also follow along with live stats from GoPack.com, or Twitter updates from @NCStateBaseball.
