NC State Completes First Day at OFCC Fighting Illini Invite

OLYMPIA FIELDS, Ill. – The NC State men’s tennis team opened the first day of competition at the Olympic Fields Country Club Fighting Illini Invite on Friday, as the four players competing for the Wolfpack notched four victories.
Singles Notables
- Nick Horton and Thomas Weigel each captured their first victory of the 2014-15 campaign, as both players earned wins in straight sets.
- Horton, a sophomore from Sydney, Australia, defeated Jake Stefanik of Kentucky, 6-1, 6-4, while Weigel earned his first victory of the season over Nicolas Montoya of Notre Dame, 6-4, 7-6 (1).
- In the Pack’s lone match of the day against a ranked foe, No. 99 Robbie Mudge dropped a hard-fought decision to 44th-ranked Tim Kopinski of host Illinois, 2-6, 6-3, 6-4.
Doubles Notables
- Both of NC State’s doubles teams recorded victories on day one of the tournament.
- The tandem of Weigel and Horton defeated Notre Dame’s team of Eddy Covalschi and Brendon Kemplin. Meanwhile, the duo of Beck Bond and Mudge cruised past Miami’s Christian Langmo and Bernard Tefel, 8-1.
Tournament Format
Coaches will attempt to flip school match-ups as they deem fit to get a variety of competition and discuss the best match-up for determining the tournament’s Most Outstanding Player [MOP].
