
No. 22 Clemson Outlasts NC State Saturday Afternoon

RALEIGH, N.C. – The NC State men’s tennis team dropped its first match inside the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center this season Saturday afternoon, as Clemson defeated the Wolfpack, 4-3. With the loss, State falls to 11-7 on the season.
The Wolfpack dropped the doubles point to open the match, as Clemson won matches at the No. 1 and No. 3 positions. The Pack took the first doubles match of the day, as Sean Weber and Simon Norenius defeated Clemson’s Alejandro Augosto and Robert Dudley in a tiebreak, 8-7 (2). The Tigers responded moments later with a victory at the No. 3 spot in the order, as Austin Powell and Thomas Weigel dropped a hard-fought match against Austin Ansari and Luke Johnson, 8-5.
The crucial opening point was decided at the top position of the lineup, as the duo of Robbie Mudge and Ian Dempster dropped their second match of the season against Clemson’s No. 25 pair of Hunter Harrington and Dominique Maden, 8-7 (2).
In singles, Weber was defeated at the No. 4 position by Ansari, 6-1, 6-3, while Harrington defeated Powell at the top spot in the order, 6-4, 6-3. The Tigers sealed the team victory after Weigel was outlasted by Clemson’s Augosto at the No. 3 position in a third set, 6-2, 2-6, 6-4.
Norenius improved his singles record to 10-3 on the season, as he downed Johnson of the Tigers, 6-0, 6-2. A native of Winston-Salem, N.C., Mudge gave the Pack its second victory of the afternoon, as he outlasted Maden in a third set, 6-4, 5-7, 6-2.
Parker McGuiness picked up his second ACC victory of the season from the No. 6 position with his 6-3, 6-3 victory against Dudley.
Up next, the Pack will host Georgia Tech Sunday, March 30 with the match scheduled to begin at noon.
