Men's Tennis Sweeps William & Mary, 7-0

WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The 34th-ranked NC State men's tennis team collected its first sweep of the season on Friday, defeating William & Mary, 7-0, at the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center. The Wolfpack won two of three matches in doubles play and all six matches in singles.
"Today's win was a good team effort," said head coach Jon Choboy, "We had a good battle in doubles and I think the momentum from doubles carried over to singles where all of the guys took care of business in straight sets."
In doubles, the 41st-ranked duo of Dave Thomson and Sean Weber made quick work of Aaron Chaffee and Adrian Vodislav, winning 8-3 at the No. 1 spot. Robbie Mudge and Simon Norenius played at the No. 3 spot in the lineup, falling to John Banks and Scott Huang, 8-4. Beck Bond and Austin Powell needed a win at the No. 2 spot in order for the Pack to claim the doubles point. Bond and Powell responded to the challenge by defeating Anton Andersson and Ben Hoogland, 8-7 (5).
After winning the doubles point, the Wolfpack proceeded to win all six singles matches in straight sets. Powell, ranked No. 125, completed his match first at the No. 2 spot, defeating Andersson, 6-1, 6-0. Norenius defeated Banks, 6-1, 6-0, while Bond topped Huang, 6-2, 6-2, to push the Pack's lead to 4-0 in the team score and claim the win.
"It was a very good match, but I think our guys closed the door when they needed to," said Choboy. "When you're playing on back-to-back days, it always works in your favor to get off the court quickly and we did that today."
Freshman Thomas Weigel defeated Hoogland at the No. 3 spot, 6-3, 6-4, and Mudge ousted Chaffee, 6-1, 6-4, while playing at the No. 1 spot in the lineup. Weber's match against Vodislav concluded play for the day as he won at the No. 4 spot, 6-2, 6-2.
NC State will have a quick turnaround as it will face No. 30 Virginia Commonwealth on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 2 p.m. in Richmond, Va.
