
Powell Continues Strong Play at ITA All-Americans

TULSA, Okla. – Junior Austin Powell of the NC State men’s tennis team continued his strong play and posted two impressive victories over top-25 opponents Thursday at the 2013 Saint Francis ITA All-American Championships.
In the singles main draw opening Round of 64, Powell posted a straight-set win over 24th-ranked Hunter Reese of Tennessee, 6-3, 6-2.
In his second match of the day, Powell and 10th-ranked Soren Hess-Olesen of Texas battled to a decisive third set, before Powell came from behind in the final frame to upset Hess-Olesen, 7-6 (6), 3-6, 7-5. Hess-Olesen marks the highest ranked opponent Powell has defeated in his career at State. A product of Muscle Shoals, Ala., Powell advances to Friday’s Round of 16 and will face 36th-ranked Guillermo Alcorta of Oklahoma.
In doubles, senior Sean Weber and freshman Nick Horton fought hard against the top-ranked pair of Mikelis Libietis and Reese of Tennessee, but ultimately was edged in the match, 8-6.
One round of singles and two rounds of doubles are scheduled to be played Friday, beginning at 10 a.m. EST.
