
Wrestling Falls at No. 9 Virginia Tech

The NC State wrestling team was in ACC action for the first time this year on Sunday afternoon, but fell at No. 9 Virginia Tech, 40-6. The Hokies improve to 11-2, including 4-0 in the ACC, while the Pack falls to 3-2 in duals this year.
The dual meet started at 125 pounds, as No. 4 Jarrod Garnett of Virginia Tech scored a major decision over the Pack’s Joe DeAngelo, 15-4. The Hokies Erik Spjut followed with a decision over freshman Sam Speno, 3-2. It was Speno’s first loss in a dual this season after winning his first four of his Pack career.
NC State scored six points at 141 pounds, as freshman Tyler Hunt was awarded a forfeit win and pulled the score to 7-6 after three bouts.
The Hokies closed out the meet with seven straight wins.
No. 6 Nick Brascetta downed Thomas Gantt, 7-1, at 149 pounds, and No. 7 Jesse Dong earned a technical fall over Matt Nereim, 15-0.
At 165 pounds, No. 5 Pete Yates earned a forfeit win for six points.
After Austin Gabel defeated the Pack’s Patrick Davis, 12-8, at 174 pounds, the Hokies scored back-to-back falls. Nick Vetterlain pinned the Pack’s Keegan Cerwinski at 184 pounds (3:18), and Derrick Borlie pinned Bill Cook at 197 pounds (0:55). David Marone of Virginia Tech closed out the dual with a 14-3 major decision over Mike Kosoy at 285 pounds.
NC State will return to action next weekend, as the Pack travels to Virginia on Sunday for an ACC meet.
