
Gwiazdowski Finishes Third at Southern Scuffle

NC State sophomore Nick Gwiazdowski finished third in the 285-pound weight class at the prestigious Southern Scuffle in Wednesday action. One of the top collegiate tournaments each season, this year’s 23 team field featured five of the top 10 teams and seven top-25 teams overall.
Gwiazdowski went 3-0 yesterday, and started his day in the semifinals at 285 pounds. The sophomore dropped his first match in a Wolfpack uniform, he won the previous 18 this season. Gwiazdowski fell 4-1 to reigning NCAA champion and the current No. 1 ranked wrestler at 285, Anthony Nelson of Minnesota.
Gwiazdowski would battle back in the consolation bracket, picking up a 6-1 win over No. 15 Jeremy Johnson of Ohio, who defeated Gwiazdowski in last year’s NCAA Touranment.
In the third place match, Gwiazdowski was awarded a forfeit victory over #4 Alan Gelogaev of Oklahoma State.
Thomas Gantt (149) and Nijel Jones (165) were also both in action today, as they won their first two matches yesterday before falling in the quarterfinals and competed in the consolation brackets today.
But both Pack wrestlers fell in their only match of the day. Gantt fell 2-1 to Dustin Walraven of South Dakota, while Jones lost 4-3 to Zachary Strickland of Appalachian State.
The Pack will now begin the dual match portion of its schedule. NC State will head to Buies Creek, N.C., next Wednesday, as the Pack will face both Campbell and VMI.
