Pack Track & Field Strong in 2013 Debut

BLACKSBURG, Va./CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – The NC State track & field team opened the doors on the 2013 portion of its indoor season Friday evening at the Hokie Invitational in Blacksburg, Va., and the Dick Taylor Invitational in Chapel Hill, N.C.
At Virginia Tech, the evening kicked off with the Pack making its presence felt in the women’s triple jump, as seniors Karimah Shepherd and Jazueline Daniels recorded a 1-2 finish in the event. Shepherd, who also won the triple jump in her season debut back on Dec. 1 at the JDL Fast Track Kick-Off, soared a season-best 41’ 3.25” while Daniels recorded a 40’ 6.25” leap.
Making her collegiate debut, freshman Ariah Graham was third to cross the finish line in the high-speed 300m run with a time of 39.04, and was one of just four performers beneath the 40-second barrier. A pair of East Carolina runners in Tiffany Harris (38.18) and Tyshonda Hawkins (38.39) claimed the top two spots in the event.
In Chapel Hill, a trio of Wolfpack throwers claimed three of the top five spots in the women’s weight throw. Redshirt freshman Nicole Chavis led the way for NC State with a second-place finish and a 61’ 7.00”, followed by redshirt freshman SeQuoia Watkins (53’ 3.00”) in fourth place and redshirt sophomore Tremanisha Taylor (52’ 06.50”) in fifth.
The men were equally successful in the weight throw as the women, also placing three in the top five finishers. Led by 2012 All-American and redshirt junior Nathaniel Williams, who finished third in the event with a 58’ 5.25” throw, redshirt senior Grant Pearce placed fourth (54’ 0.5”) and redshirt sophomore Jule Rich finished fifth (51’ 8.25”) in the competition.
A group of men’s distance runners competed in the 3,000m run, where redshirt sophomore John Wolfe paced the field and took first place with a time of 9:09.71, followed by redshirt sophomore Michael Mansy (9:16.68) in second, redshirt freshman Graham Crawford (9:16.74) in third and redshirt sophomore John Harwell (9:17.56) in fourth.
NC State will return to action tomorrow with day two of the Hokie Invitational beginning at 11 a.m., while the final day of action at UNC will also take place. Links to live results during tomorrow’s action can be found below.
