PHILADELPHIA – NC State’s Lacey Shuman and Tremanisha Taylor both won college events at The Penn Relays on Thursday, kicking off a long coast-to-coast weekend for the Wolfpack men’s and women’s track and field teams.
Shuman, a sophomore from Timonium, Md., had a personal-best mark of 5-feet, 10-inches in the high jump to win the event. Her mark was just two inches shy of the school record set in 1980 by Yvonne Heinrich and matched on two other occasions.
It’s the second time this season Shuman has won her event. She took first place with a mark of 5-feet, 7-inches at the 49er Classic.
Senior teammate Danielle Adams was 10th in the same event with a season-best mark of 5-feet, 7.75-inches.
Taylor, a redshirt freshman from Henderson, N.C., also had the best mark of her career with a throw of 53-feet, 11.75-inches, just 1.25 inches away from the school record set by teammate Lawanda Henry in 2010.
It’s her third section win of the season. She also posted wins in the shot put at the Duke Invitational and at the 49er Classic.
Junior Karimah Shepherd finished 10th in the championship division of the women’s long jump with a mark of 18-feet, 6-inches.
Redshirt freshmen Bryan Spreitzer and Michael Mansy competed in the men's college 5,000 meters, with Spreitzer finishing eighth and Mansy 11th.
The Wolfpack will continue competition with jumpers and throwers at The Penn Relays on Friday and Saturday. Follow live results here.
Head coach Rollie Geiger is also sending a large contingent of distance runners to Stanford’s Payton Jordan Invitational on Sunday in Palo Alto, Calif. Several Wolfpack standouts, including 2011 outdoor NCAA Championship qualifiers Ryan Hill and Andrew Colley, will line up in the 5,000 meters.
At this same meet last year, Hill broke the ACC and school record with a time of 13:31.67.
Also running for the Wolfpack women will be 2011 All-American Kenyetta Iyevbele in the 1,500 meters, along with Tiayonna Blackmon, Erin Mercer and Samantha Norman.
