COLLEGE PARK, Md. — Looking for its second upset of a nationally ranked opponent this weekend, the NC State wrestling team fell to No. 12-ranked Maryland 27-12 on Sunday at the Comcast Center.
The Wolfpack rolled into Washington, D.C., on Friday night and handed ninth-ranked American University a 25-18 defeat, but could not repeat the upset against the Terrapins, who improved to 12-0 overall and 2-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. The Wolfpack dropped to 4-5 overall, 0-3 in conference.
“It’s great to get a split, but after winning the first one the natural tendency is to want a sweep,” Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said. “It just wasn’t meant to be. We wrestled pretty well. The effort was definitely there. Maryland was just better.”
After dropping the first two matches, redshirt senior Darrius Little, ranked No. 11 at 141 pounds, got the Wolfpack on the board by defeating Frank Goodwin in sudden victory, 7-5. The decision upped Little’s record for the season to 27-9 and 91-54 for his career. Little now has won eight matches in a row and 14 of his last 15.
Freshman Robert O’Neill got the other victory for the Wolfpack with a 4-3 decision over Ty Snook at 184 pounds. O’Neill, who also won on Friday night at American, now is 16-11 and has won six of his last eight matches.
The Wolfpack also picked up a forfeit victory at heavyweight.
NC State will return to action on Friday, Jan. 27, at 8 p.m. Eastern Time, in a non-conference match at Oklahoma State.
