RALEIGH, N.C. – NC State swept an ACC doubleheader from Boston College at the Curtis & Jacqueline Dail Softball Stadium on Friday, April 2, by scores of 3-2 and 7-0. The victories push the Wolfpack to 22-15 (5-3 ACC) on the year, while the Eagles slide to 9-16 (0-5 ACC).
The first game of the afternoon served as the Pack’s third-annual “Power in Pink” cancer fundraiser and awareness event, raising $2,254 for the Kay Yow / WBCA Cancer Fund.
“We had a great crowd today for our cancer awareness event,” said head coach Lisa Navas. “I’m really proud of the kids for the way that they fought all day long.”
The Pack took the opening contest by a 3-2 score. Lindsay Campana (15-5) picked up her fifth-straight decision, issuing five K’s and allowing four hits. Nicole D’Argento (3-5) got hit with the loss.
BC got one run in the top of the first when Brittany Wilkins scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded. Stephanie Call evened the score quickly however, taking the first pitch of the bottom of the second for a ride over the wall in right-center.
Breanna Andrews put the Wolfpack ahead at 3-1 with a pinch-hit two-run single in the bottom of the fifth. Kristine Bechtholdt walked and Lauren Peters came on to run in her place. Katie Mansilla then beat out an infield single, and both runners advanced to second and third on Dani Weir’s late and errant throw to first. Andrews followed by sending one through the right side, putting the Pack on top.
Renee Ramos trimmed the score to 3-2 with a solo shot in the top of the sixth.
Call (6-5) tossed a four-hit shutout in a 7-0 game two victory. Allison Gage (2-3) picked up the loss.
The Pack took a 2-0 lead in the bottom of the third as Landon Warren and Peters reached on back-to-back bunt singles, and then moved to second and third on a wild pitch. Bridget Desbois later plated both with a two-out single.
The Pack blew it wide open with five runs on five hits in the bottom of the sixth. Bechtholdt doubled the Pack’s lead with a two-run bomb to left center following an Alyssa Allbritten walk. Peter’s later made it 5-0 with an RBI double after singles from Alyssa Ishibashi and Warren. Claudia Cooper furthered the damage with a two-run double.
NC State and Boston College will wrap up the series tomorrow, Saturday, April 3, with a 12 noon first pitch.
