Junior 157-pounder Colton Palmer won three straight wrestleback matches Thursday to capture fifth place at the UNCG Southern Scuffle at the Greensboro Coliseum Special Events Center.
NC State finished in 22nd place in the team standings.
"I was really pleased with the way we wrestled, with the progress we've made since Las Vegas," Wolfpack head coach Carter Jordan said, referring to the Wolfpack's 34th-place finish at the Las Vegas Invitational on Dec. 4. "The guys were aggressive and really got after it. We still have work to do, but this was a clear step forward."
Palmer, who went 5-2 in the tournament and won four matches by pin, improved to 14-7 for the season.
Junior 141-pounder Darrius Little won four of six bouts in the tournament to improve 15-6. Sophomore heavyweight Eloheim Palma also won four of six bouts. He was wrestling unattached.
"Colton had a great tournament," Jordan said. "He's really improved. If he continues to progress like that, he has a chance to make a splash in March. Darrius Little wrestled really well, and Quinton Godley had a good tournament. Eloheim hasn't wrestled in more than a month and got a bad draw with Jeremy Johnson [from Ohio]. That guy's really good, but Eloheim had a nice tournament."
Senior 149-pounder Darrion Caldwell, the 2009 national champion, did not wrestle in the Southern Scuffle and will make his 2010-11 debut on Tuesday, Jan. 4, in a 1 p.m. dual match at Bloomsburg. The Wolfpack then will travel to Rider for a 4 p.m. match Jan. 5.
"We still don't have our full lineup out there and we've shown a lot of improvement," Jordan said. "When we get everyone out there, if we continue to show the work ethic we've shown the last month, this should be a really nice team."
