CLEMSON, S.C. - The No. 44 NC State men's tennis team closed out its regular season on Sunday, Apr. 17, with a conference loss at No. 27 Clemson, 5-2. William Noblitt and Val Banada picked up singles wins for the Wolfpack, while Noblitt and partner Mason Schermerhorn collected a doubles victory. With the loss, NC State slides to 15-11 (2-8 ACC) on the season, while Clemson jumps to 24-9 (6-4 ACC).
In doubles, Nick Cavaday and Will Shaw fell to Nathan Thompson and Ryan Young at No. 1, 8-3. At No. 2 Banada and Andre Iriarte were bested by Sander Koning and Clement Reix, 8-5. Schermerhorn and Noblitt collected the Pack's only doubles win over Brett Twente and Ryan Cook, 8-5.
In singles, Clemson took the first four bouts to win the match. At No. 1, Thompson dropped Cavaday, 6-4, 6-3. Koning followed with a win at No. 2 over Conor Taylor, 6-4, 6-1. Reix then defeated Iriarte, 7-5, 7-5. Shaw collected the second frame from Ryan Young after losing the first set, but ultimately fell, 6-2, 2-6, 6-2, in the fourth pairing.
With a victory already clinched for the hosting Tigers, the lower two spots in the Wolfpack lineup came alive to prevent a Clemson sweep. Noblitt took down Twente in straight sets, 6-4, 6-2, at No. 5. Banada closed out the day with a win over Gee, 6-1, 6-3.
