
No. 53 UNC Men's Tennis Upsets No. 37 Wolfpack

RALEIGH, N.C. - NC State faced its 11th ranked opponent of the season, and fell to 6-5 against ranked foes after a 4-3 loss to No. 53 UNC. The 37th-ranked Wolfpack couldn't secure the doubles point, and split in singles, in the narrow loss. William Noblitt continued to shine and solidified his standing as one of the top flight players at No. 6 singles, and Nick Cavaday and Andre Iriarte rolled to win for NC State. Val Banada, Will Shaw and Conor Taylor lost in straight sets as NC State fell to 15-5 on the season.
Noblitt improved to 15-1 overall and 6-1 at No. 6 with a 6-4, 7-6 win over Jonathan Janda.
Nick Cavaday won at No. 2 in three sets to improve to 13-3 and 10-3 at No. 2 singles, while Andre Iriarte won at No. 4 to improve to 11-4 overall and 3-0 at No. 4.
The doubles point was key in this one, as NC State took No. 3 and UNC took No. 1. NC State and UNC were tied at 7-7 in the No. 1 spot, as the No. 33 ranked duo of Pomeroy and Boyd broke the Wolfpack serve to mvoe ahead 8-7. NC STate responded and was up 40-love in the 16th game, but after about eight deuce games and seven match/break points, UNC finally pulled ahead for the crucial doubles point.
NC State will return to action against No. 4 Virginia on Friday, Mar. 25 at 2 p.m. at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center.
