COLLEGE PARK, Md. - NC State scored three pins Saturday afternoon on its way to a 37-9 victory over Maryland in College Park in Comcast Pavilion. The Wolfpack scored three pins and a forfeit to overpower the Terps and improve to 7-6 overall, 3-0 in the Atlantic Coast Conference. Maryland dropped to 3-10-1 overall and 0-3 in the ACC.
In the day's first bout, at 125 pounds, Kevin Vinh (125) struck early with a takedown, but Garrett Cummings rallied with two takedowns in the third period to edge Vinh, 5-4. The Wolfpack's Matt Spengler picked up a 4-1 win over Jeff Oldham at 133, but Charlie Pinto gave Maryland life with a pin of Jeff Breese at 141. Pinto scored a takedown a minute into the first period, and then methodically turned Breese to his back for the fall at 2:06. It was Pinto's 20th victory on the season and it tied the match at 6-6.
Jared Villecco, who was seeing his first action in over a month, came out next for Maryland looking to capitalize on the momentum, and put together a tremendous first period, scoring three takedowns and eight near-fall points to build a 16-4 lead on Alex Hernandez. Villecco started the second period down and scored an escape to extend his lead, but Hernandez sent Villecco straight to the mat with a takedown midway through the period and converted for the fall at 3:53. Hernandez trailed 17-6 when he scored the pin.
The 157 bout also provided plenty of excitement, as NC State's Kody Hamrah held on to defeat Adam James, 11-10. Trailing late in the third, James rallied with two takedowns in the last minute. With just seven seconds remaining in the match, Hamrah was able to roll out of James' grasp and ended up in control after the scramble for the reversal and the victory.
Jason Kiessling got the Terps back on track with an 8-5 decision over Ryan Nowicki at 165. Kiessling socred a pair of takedowns in the first and amassed over two minutes of riding time in the victory.
NC State pulled away with first period pins at 174 and 184. Kevin Gabrielson took Luke Stauffer down just over 30 seconds into the match and then converted the fall just under a minute later. Colbert stuck Mike Macerolli for the pin in 45 seconds.
The Pack got a major decision at 197 from Zach Garren, 9-1 over Yony Nov, and Wolfpack heavyweight Jainor Palma won the final bout of the afternoon by forfeit.
