Raleigh, N.C. - The NC State men's soccer team fell to visiting Maryland-Baltimore County 2-1, Wednesday afternoon at SAS Soccer Park. After falling behind 2-0 at the half, the Wolfpack (4-2) came out of the lockerroom firing with a 10-3 advantage in shots. NC State would score a goal in the 55th minute, but could not find the eventual equalizer and suffered its first home loss of the season. The Retrievers (3-0-1) scored goals in the fifth and 37th minute for the tough road win.
The first shot of the game went in for UMBC. Mike Pennacchia crossed a ball into the box, and Marcus Gross headed it into the net to give the Retrievers the quick 1-0 lead only 4:28 into the contest. UMBC would add another goal at the 36:29 mark, after Powell Cucchiella dribbled all the way down the right side of the field and slotted the ball into the lower corner of the net for the eventual game-winner.
After only putting one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes, NC State played much better in the second frame. Not only did the Pack offense come to life with many scoring chances within the 10 shots taken, but the Pack defense limited UMBC to just three shots with none on goal.
Junior Aaron King scored the Pack's lone goal of the game at the 54:29 mark. After UMBC failed to clear the ball from its own penalty area, King corralled the ball and fired a shot to net his second goal of the season. It was not enough however, as the Retrievers held on for the 2-1 victory.
NC State returns to action this weekend with the first ACC game of the season. The Wolfpack will play host to #2 Maryland on Sunday at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
