RALEIGH, N.C. - The NC State men's tennis team ended its season with a 4-0 loss to North Carolina in the quarterfinal round of the ACC Championship in Raleigh, N.C. After dropping the doubles point in a very close finish, the Wolfpack couldn't hold on and take the team win, as senior Jon Davis played his last match for NC State. The Wolfpack finished the season with six team wins, but earned some hard fought points during the season that will bolster the team heading into next season.
Davis and sophomore Will Shaw fell 8-3 at No. 1 doubles, leaving the doubles point to be decided by the other two matches. All-ACC selection Conor Taylor and Andre Iriarte battled at No. 2, with their match going back and forth. But William Noblitt and Val Banada fell at No. 3, 8-6, clinching the point for North Carolina, despite the Wolfpack duo's rally from a 4-1 deficit to hold at 5-5.
In singles, Noblitt fell at No. 6 to Brad Pomeroy in a 6-4, 6-2 decision. Davis then fell victim at No. 5, losing to Geoff Boyd, 3 an 3. The match was clinched by North Carolina when Conor Taylor fell to Nicholas Monroe, a top-30 player and All-ACC honoree. Taylor had defeated Monroe in straight sets during dual match play in conference.
The Wolfpack will lose Davis to graduation, and with an incoming recruiting class that will only strengthen the lineup, NC State will look to improve on its finish and make noise in the ACC next season.
