CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 22 ranked University of Virginia men's soccer team defeated the N.C. State Wolfpack by the score of 2-1 in an Atlantic Coast Conference match played in front of 1,775 spectators at UVa's Klockner Stadium. The Cavaliers' Nico Colaluca scored his first collegiate goal (the game-winning score) to break a 1-1 tie and also added an assist on UVa's first goal of the match to pace Virginia to the one-goal victory.
UVa took an early 1-0 lead at 16:55 when Adam Cristman scored his fifth goal of the season on a header in the box. The Cavaliers' Will Hall gathered a free ball near midfield and directed a pass towards Colaluca. Colaluca then maneuvered his way through the NCSU defense before sending a cross into the box where Cristman awaited the pass. Cristman elevated and got his head on the ball, sending it into the back of the Wolfpack's goal for the first score of the match. Virginia took it's one-goal lead into the locker room at halftime.
Four minutes and 30 seconds into the second period, N.C. State tied the game at 1-1 at the 49:30 mark when Rami Ghanayem scored his first goal of the season on a free kick following a UVa foul. Ghanayem's kick came from about 28-yards out on the left flank. The score would remain tied at one apiece until the 76th minute of play.
With the match tied at 1-1, Colaluca scored the game-winning goal at 75:44 when UVa's Hunter Freeman sent a cross into the box found teammate Ian Holder. Holder directed Freeman's cross towards Colaluca, where he headed the ball into goal for the game-winning score. Freeman's assist marked the fourth consecutive match he has recorded a point.
Colaluca's goal, the game-winner, would be all the scoring the Cavaliers would need from that point on as Virginia held on to post the one-goal victory over the Wolfpack.
UVa goalkeeper Ryan Burke made four saves in the win, while N.C. State's Jorge Gonzalez made six of the Wolfpack's seven saves between the pipes before he was ejected from the game after being issued a red card in the 79th minute of play.
With the victory, Virginia's record improves to 7-2-0 overall, 2-1-0 in the ACC. The loss drops N.C. State's record to 4-4-1 overall, 0-2-1 in the conference.
The Wolfpack will return to action next Sunday, October 10, and host Wake Forest at 2:00 p.m. at Method Road.
