WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - The North Carolina State women's basketball team defeated the Wake Forest Demon Deacons, 61-47, in ACC women's basketball action on Sunday at Joel Coliseum.
With the win, the Wolfpack snap a five-game losing streak and improve their season total to 7-5 overall, 1-0 in the ACC. The Demon Deacons fall to 6-6 on the season, 0-2 in the conference.
After WFU took a 10-8 lead at the 13:10 mark of the first half, NC State went on a 13-0 scoring run, sparked by freshman walk-on Liz Bailey, who hit three straight three pointers. The Wolfpack built as much as a 17-point lead (30-13), slowed only by three free throws by LaChina Robinson as the Deacs did not score a field goal for a span of 7:54.
Consecutive three pointers by Meredith Bell and Tonia Brown cut the Wake Forest deficit to nine points late in the half, but Bailey continued her hot shooting, scoring her fifth trey with four seconds left to give the 'Pack a 41-27 lead at the break.
"I was pleased with the first half," said NC State head coach Kay Yow. "We played well and hard defensively. After the last five games, it was great to come out like that."
Wake Forest could never get going offensively in the second half, shooting just 10 percent (3-31) after the break. However, the Deacs did hit a season-high 78 percent from the free throw line, connecting on 18-of-23 from the charity stripe for the game.
"It was the type of game I expected," said Wake Forest head coach Charlene Curtis. "NC State has a strong physical presence. Although we had much better defense in the second half, we didn't have the patience and persistence."
Bailey led all scorers with 20 points, including 6-of-10 from beyond the arc. Carisse Moody also posted double figures for the WolfPack with 12 points. Talisha Scates finished with a game-high 13 rebounds.
Deacon sophomore Tonia Brown finished as WFU's leading scorer with 14 points. She also posted a team-high seven rebounds. Robinson had nine points and five rebounds, while freshman Erin Ferrell scored seven points, all from the free throw line.
